Use My Seven Steps for Your Recovery

David Festenstein is a Communication Specialist, Coach and Professional Speaker, who suffered a stroke in 2008, which left him paralysed on his right side and unable to walk.

Using  his communication training, he applied this to deal with the event and then subsequently to drive his recovery process.

In fact his Stroke Consultant said “It is one of the best recoveries I have ever seen”. David kept an extensive diary and journal which reflected his “Language of Recovery”.

When he reviewed his story and observations, he realised that he had used 7 distinct steps. His Stroke Consultant encouraged him to speak at Medical Conferences where he received excellent feedback. On the basis of this success he set up workshops, training and coaching health professionals in his “7 steps to recovery model” and The Stroke Association made a podcast of his story.

One of the most valuable observations made about his recovery model, is that it could be used for any severe health or personal setback. In fact one attendee at one of the conferences he presented at, said it could even be used to help people getting over a divorce!

How can David’s Seven Steps to Recovery help you?

  1. Reframe the experience, in David’s Case he said “I am alive”
  2. Gratitude – He focused on what he still had rather than what he had lost
  3. Belief – He held on to the possibility that he would get better
  4. Vision – He created a bright picture in his head of being a better man back with his family
  5. Manage your  Mood -he kept a diary and Journal which celebrated every aspect of his recovery
  6. Work with those supporting you -David collaborated with his health professionals to drive his recovery
  7. Follow the process -David was very diligent in doing his exercises and following his recovery regime.

David has now decided to apply this gift of recovery beyond the area of stroke recovery and to help with many different types of health and personal setback. He is part of the Community User Engagement Team at The Centre for Innovation in Health Management at Leeds Business School, as well as being on the Executive Coaching Panel at Warwick Business School.
